NAPS will be holding a FREE playwriting workshop at Theatrikos on Saturday, May 20th from 10-noon. We invite you to consider attending and bringing a new 10-minute play that you are considering entering into the Northern Arizona Playwriting Showcase this year. (NAPS submissions are open May 1-July 1.)
This event will be open to all playwrights in the area.
This includes current 8th graders through college students, as well as our amateur and professional writing community.
We have two NAPS competitions:
-one for current 8th-12th graders in Arizona (which is free to enter) (one play will be chosen by the NAPS board)
-and another for everyone else, world-wide (And yes, we do get entries from around the globe each year but we really love when local playwrights take part and win! Judging is blind, so our judges never know who wrote the plays or where they are from until the winning plays are announced to the public. 9 plays will be selected by judges this year.)
So please share with talented current 8th-12th graders you know, as well college students and amateur and professional writers in the Flagstaff area!
At the May 20th workshop, we will talk about our 10th annual NAPS contest rules and answer questions about writing 10-minute plays, plus we will be inviting local playwrights at any stage in the game to bring a NEW draft of a 10-minute play (in proper play format) they might want to enter into NAPS to get feedback from other playwrights and actors in attendance. Writers in 8th grade on up through professional levels without 10-minute plays to workshop are also welcome to come and get a feel for the format.
It is only a two hour event, so we can give 15 minutes max to each play, including having actors read the parts and audience feedback – so each play must be 10 minutes or less and need only 3 actors or fewer (which our NAPS contest requires, also). Actors won’t get the plays until just before they read them, as this is just a workshop. Depending on how many playwrights bring plays to workshop, we may divide up into smaller groups so everyone gets workshopped. Plays shorter than 8-minutes or longer than 10-minutes will not be workshopped at this event!
Please email me back by May 5 if you plan on bringing a new 10-minute play to workshop to the 5/20. No RSVP is needed if you just plan to attend the event.
If you are a teacher (at any level in Flagstaff from junior high to college) and would like someone from NAPS to come talk with your class about writing 10-minute plays and the workshop, please let me know that too when you email me back! We can arrange to have myself or one of our other board members come talk with your class. If you are in 8th-12th grade, feel free to email me if you’d like me to contact your teacher about this event or having us come to your class.
On behalf the NAPS board, we hope you consider participating in the workshop and entering a play in the contest this year. It is our 10th annual event, so judges will select 9 10-minute plays plus one AZ high school play for the 10-play showcase, which is Sept. 8-10 this year.
You are welcome to forward this email to other Northern Arizona playwrights you know.
Feel free to email me if you have any questions,
