Theatrikos kicking off 47th season with the endearingly absurd

Theatrikos Theatre Company announces its 2019 season opener, Exit Laughing, Feb. 1 through 17, 2019, at the Doris Harper-White Community Playhouse in historic downtown Flagstaff. This show kicks off Theatrikos’ 47th season and is directed Mickey Mercer and Amelia Swann.

A weekly bridge night with the girls takes an unfortunate turn when one in the foursome inconveniently dies. But the longtime friends transform it into the wildest and most exciting night of their lives when they “borrow” the ashes from the funeral home for one last card game.

Please note that this production features adult themes and situations and may not be suitable for younger children.

“Endearingly absurd is a great way to describe Exit Laughing—or perhaps absurdly endearing—and this quality is what drew us to the play,” Swann said. “The characters are a little nutty and crazy, hilarious things happen, but there is a strong undercurrent of love and warmth and even relatability.”

Codirector Mercer added that the women have weathered life’s ups and downs together, sticking by each other, even when they get on each other’s nerves. “The play makes clear that even death cannot break the bond of this special relationship,” he said.

The cast of five includes Ginny Brown, Susan Chastain, Kelly Gibbs, Mark Hanson, and Audrey Young.

Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Sundays Feb. 1 through Feb. 17. Individual tickets are $22-24 plus applicable fees. Student and senior discounts may be applied. The Feb. 1 opening performance includes a post-show reception with the cast featuring food from Charly’s Pub & Grill and Beaver Street Brewery!

Tickets can be purchased online (soon); by calling (928) 774-1662; or by visiting the theater’s box office, which is open from noon to 6 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and two hours prior to each performance.
